Why Amazon Sellers Move From Reselling to Private Label Products
Reselling on Amazon teaches you the marketplace: how Buy Box rotation works, what a healthy margin looks like after FBA fees, and how quickly a listing can stall when a dozen sellers share it. But reselling has a ceiling. You compete on price against everyone holding the same ASIN, you inherit whatever packaging the brand shipped, and you carry the risk of a listing being hijacked or a supplier cutting you off. That is why so many sellers eventually shift to private label products for Amazon — ready products sourced and branded as your own, and listed as a single-owner ASIN with no competing offers.
Private label changes the economics. You control the product specification, the packaging, the bundle, the photographs and the price. Repeat purchases build brand equity rather than the factory's. The trade-off is that sourcing becomes your responsibility: you need supplier options, samples, compliance documents and a shipping plan that lands stock at the right fulfilment centre before your inventory runs out. The Private Label Supplier, operated by Mutual Trade, exists to take that operational load off Amazon sellers and brand owners. We are a sourcing and supply-chain service based in Yiwu, China — not a factory. Products are made by vetted supplier factories around Yiwu International Trade City and the industrial belts of Jinhua, Yongkang, Pujiang and Dongyang, and we manage quality, consolidation and shipping through one window instead of you chasing each factory separately.
The Workflow: From Category Selection to a Branded Product
Category and product selection with trend data
Most successful private label lines start with a category the seller already understands rather than a random hot product. We support that decision with trend-based product selection advice: which shapes, sizes and price points are moving, where the seasonality sits, and how a product can be extended into a small line. For each request the team prepares 3-5 alternative options — different suppliers, materials or specifications — with a side-by-side comparison of cost, lead time and quality risk, plus best-seller line-extension ideas such as the same product in new sizes or colours, material upgrades, or gift-set bundles.
Samples: first custom sample in 7-15 days
Once a direction is chosen, sampling starts. The first custom sample typically takes 7-15 days, and a fast sampling channel prioritises small sample runs of 1-50 pieces so you can check feel, function and finish before committing to bulk. Structural development projects get a feasibility assessment and a detailed cost breakdown covering materials, labour and mould amortisation, with a development cycle usually of 15-60 days before a first sample plan is locked. Ready samples from the Yiwu sample room are free or low-cost with courier charged to the buyer's account; customised samples are prepaid. We also assist with IP protection — NDA signing and infringement-risk alerts — before you invest in tooling or artwork.
Branding and retail packaging
Customisation covers logo printing, foil stamping, embroidered labels, Pantone colour matching and material upgrades such as food-grade, eco or antibacterial materials. Packaging options include colour boxes, hangtags, blister packs, OPP bags and gift boxes; labels and instruction manuals can be designed and translated in 10+ languages. For a deeper look at the packaging side, see our private label packaging service, and for the wider launch process read how to start a private label brand.
Important: branding carries category minimum order quantities and a separate customisation fee. There is no "no minimum" branding option — ask your account manager for the exact figure for your product.
| Category | MOQ per style (pieces/sets) |
|---|---|
| Household goods | 100-500 |
| Hardware tools | 200-500 |
| Bags | 200-400 |
| Jewellery and accessories | 300-800 |
| Textiles and apparel | 200-1,000 |
| Toys | 200-500 |
| Small appliances and holiday gifts | 200-600 |
| Accessories and consumable spare parts | 50-200 |
Across categories, MOQs typically run 100-800 pieces per style, and multiple SKUs and categories can be mixed in one consolidated container.
Amazon-Specific Preparation Handled With the Order
A product that is beautiful in a showroom can still fail at the fulfilment centre if the labels are wrong. Amazon-specific preparation is handled alongside your order: UPC/EAN barcode generation, SKU labels, Amazon FBA labels, product bundling, and California Prop 65 warning labels where needed. Compliance documents are coordinated per product and market — CPSIA for children's products, FDA food-contact testing for kitchenware, EN71 for toys, REACH and RoHS for the EU — arranged through ISO 17025 third-party laboratories such as SGS, BV, HQTS, Intertek and TUV. Our coordination and document-preparation service fee is RMB 500-2,000 per order, while testing fees are charged directly by the laboratory (the fee for a full EN71 set is confirmed per product against the laboratory's quote); a standard test report takes about 15-45 days. Compliance is arranged per product, destination market and batch — it is never guaranteed for all products. Certificates available upon request.
Shipping Paths to Amazon
Goods are consolidated in Yiwu and shipped on EXW, FOB Ningbo or Shanghai, CIF or DDP terms. Sellers can ship FBA direct or route stock through an overseas warehouse for replenishment flexibility. Ready stock ships in 7-25 days depending on category; customised production takes 15-50 days. Sea lead times are roughly 30-45 days to Europe, 45-55 days to South America and 35-50 days to the US West Coast; China-Europe rail takes 20-30 days; air freight door to door 7-15 days; express 3-7 days worldwide. Seasonal and holiday products should have capacity locked 90-120 days ahead.
Inventory Planning and Returns Handling Support
Repeat orders are where private label brands quietly win or lose. We support inventory planning for reorders and provide returns handling support, so damaged or unsold stock can be assessed and, where feasible, refurbished or repacked. Quality control is built into every run: incoming, in-process, first-piece, final and outgoing inspection, AQL sampling at 2.5/4.0 or a stricter 0.65 level on request, reports with high-definition photos, video, a defect list and re-inspection records, and batch samples kept for at least 12 months. Buyers may appoint third-party inspectors such as SGS, BV, TUV or Intertek.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a large budget to start private label products for Amazon?

Can you guarantee my product will pass Amazon compliance?
No. We coordinate testing with third-party laboratories and prepare documents such as CPC, declarations of conformity and multilingual labels, but compliance is assessed per product, market and batch. Certificates available upon request.
What are the payment terms?
T/T with 30% deposit and 70% balance, L/C for larger orders, and open-account terms for established customers after a credit review. Contact [email protected] to discuss your line.
